$ 2373.35

Availability: 82 in stock
  • Country/Region of Manufacture: United States
  • Brand: Sega
  • Original/Reproduction: Original
  • Game Title: Matchlock
  • Year: 1972
  • Condition: This game is in need of restoration. On the positive side, the electronics and interior components appear to be in very good condition - totally restorable. The cosmetics look excellent inside. The gears and motors and relays and chains and pop up targets all look to be in great shape. It isn't currently working, but I haven't done any troubleshooting at this point. It does come with the original manual and complete schematics so it shouldn't be tough to get running. On the negative side, the cabinet is rather rough. It wasn't stored very nicely for about 30 years, and the veneer is peeling off many parts of the cabinet. Some parts of it look to have gotten wet. The control panel is in bad shape under the formica. The top has wood layers peeled off. The bottom seems very rough and I don't know how much movement it can take before restoration. It does have both original back doors and the side access door is in good shape. Summary: Restorable, nice insides but rough outside.

    WORKING CONDITION:
This game is not working.  I have not done anything to attempt to diagnose or fix it, although I'm sure I could.  Especially since I have the original manual with complete schematics.  But I am hoping to sell it as-is as a project for you to restore.
When you plug it in, it lights up (both fluorescent fixtures work), and nothing else really happens.  Tripping the coin switch makes a clicking sound but the game doesn't start.  I think the start or coin relay is clicking.  But anyway, since it won't start a game when tripping the coin switch, I don't really know what else is working and not working.
The mechanics inside look to be in excellent condition.  The motors and gears and all that stuff down in the bottom the move the targets in the trenches look to be in great shape.
Here is a description of what the game is:
Matchlock is a 1972 politically incorrect electro-mechanical gun game where the player shoots Oriental people wearing rickshaw-type hats, which move in diagonal rows, using a replica of an old matchlock gun. When a man is shot, he screams an electronic death squeal in an "Oriental" manner. Each hit is worth 10 points and a free game can be given between 140 and 190 points. The Matchlock game has solid-state sound and the gun has recoil.
I have a lot more pictures of this game, but eBay seems to only allow 12.  So if you want to see more, send me a message and I will try to send you a link to more pictures.  They won't let me put the link here unfortunately.
    PHYSICAL CONDITION and RATINGS:
Physically, this game is a mixed bag.  I mean, the cabinet is in very rough condition in many ways.  As I mentioned above, it was stored in a leaky, poor condition, non-climate controlled warehouse for like 30 years.  So although it didn't get flooded or soaked in water, it did see some water / humidity / moisture at some point.  The top of the cabinet has the veneer peeling off.  The control panel seems like it got pretty wet at some point because the wood is in terrible condition underneath the formica laminate on top.
The gun looks to be in great condition really.  It should clean up and restore to be excellent.  The cabinet is mostly complete and intact, including the coin door and even the back doors.  But I think a full restoration would require a new cabinet.  I don't know because my woodworking experience is very limited.  Maybe it's possible to restore the wood on this cabinet?  I just don't know.  But you can see in the pictures that the outer "layer" of the wood is peeling or missing in some cases.  Luckily, it's intact enough that you can get a pattern for re-silkscreening a new or restored cabinet.
I haven't tipped this on its side or back to look at the bottom of the cabinet, but it seems very weak and with very little life left in it.  It has trouble standing up straight.  It rocks forward a bit.  And it leaves debris behind whenever I dolly it and move it somewhere.  So something is disintegrating on the bottom and I don't know how much life is left in it.  It would be best for you to pick this game up because I'm worried about a shipper moving this and being rough and busting out the rest of the bottom and it kind of crumbling on them.  Maybe if it were carefully put on a pallet and secured there somehow it could handle shipping.  But I just don't know.  So please be aware of this and let's discuss it before shipping it across the country.  You need to be aware and accept that this is the case because I'm selling it as-is and don't want you to be surprised.  Maybe the best thing would be for me to lay it on its back on a large pallet and ship it that way because the back seems pretty solid.
HOWEVER, with all this said, I think that as of now, the interior components, both cosmetic and electronic, are in very good restorable condition.  I think if you can shore up the bottom or put the guts in a new cabinet, you can probably have a very nice game when you're done.
Look at the pictures of the interior components and you will see what I mean - it is really in decent shape inside there.
Oh, and one last thing - the front glass is not only missing a fair amount of paint due to flaking, but it also has one crack in the lower right corner of the glass.   It has been taped or glued or something on the back to keep it solid and together, but there is a definite crack in the corner.
Both back doors and the side access door and the front coin door are original and in decent, restorable condition.
If you need any more pictures or have any questions, please let me know - I'm happy to answer.

    LOCATION:
This game is located in sunny, beautiful downtown McLean, IL 61754.  That's right...in the heart of Classic Arcade World where Arcadia: America's Playable Arcade Museum, Pinball Paradise, and Hotel Arcadia are located!  I suggest buying this game and then making its pickup a fun family road trip!  We have over 140 playable games and luxurious arcade-themed lodging options.  Contact me for more details or look for hotel Arcadia on airbnb.
    SHIPPING:
Included in the price is FREE WHITE GLOVE SHIPPING from North American Van Lines.  They will bring it right inside your house (ground floor only).  This is for the 48 contiguous United States only.  If you want this shipped internationally, it will cost extra and we will have to discuss it and get a shipping quote before you pull the trigger.
Regarding shipping time, North American Van Lines only picks up from my location once a week.  So shipping will probably take between 7 and 14 days depending on where you are in the country.  In some rare cases possibly longer.
For what it's worth, I have been collecting (hoarding) games for over 30 years and selling them on eBay since about 1997. I have probably shipped two thousand games (many but not all on eBay), from individual games to full containers.  You won't find a more reputable seller...check my feedback.  Unfortunately, I cannot provide a money-back guarantee on this just because a lot can happen in shipping.  What I CAN guarantee is that if you pick the game up, or if not when the game leaves my hands, it will be exactly as described and photoed above.  And in 30 years of selling, I have never left anyone in the lurch or ripped anyone off.  I'm a fair, honest guy...ask anyone.
