Ceteco was founded in 1890 as N.V. Handel- en Industriemaatschappij "Curaçao" founded in Amsterdam. Previously, Curaçao had already developed into a hub for Dutch shipping in Latin America. The Royal West Indian Mail Service (KWIM), founded in 1882, offered the moorings at Sint Anna Bay for sale. The Trade and Industry Company "Curaçao" was founded to exploit this. The KWIM not only participated in this undertaking, but also managed it.
In 1911 the name was changed to the Curaçaosche Handel-Maatschappij (CHM). This was called the Curaçao Trading Company (CTC) in English, and the name Ceteco, introduced in 1970, comes from this abbreviation. The "Curaçao" was originally a manager of quays and some associated transshipment and bunker companies. They sold shipping supplies and traded in coal and water for passing ships, including carrying out repairs at their own yards. Schooners were also built there. From 1911, trading activities were expanded. People started importing wood, cement and roof tiles and later also products from the island, such as straw hats and orange peels. During the First World War, the focus shifted to transport between Latin American countries. To this end, several ships were built at its own yards, including the large schooner Hollandia. When the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company (later Shell) decided to build a refinery on Curaçao (see Isla) in 1915, the company purchased the Asiento and Valentijn peninsulas from the CTC.
They started trading in coffee, among other things, and were active in countries such as Venezuela, Colombia, Guatemala and El Salvador. They also started trading with Mozambique.
