Description
The unusual aspect of this violin is the autograph of banjo player Ralph Stanley (unauthenticated, but looks genuine). The violin was likely made in the 1930's in what is now the Czech Republic. It is labeled Carl Neumann, copy of Antonius Stradivarius (see photo of label). It is in very good playing condition, with a new set of Thomastic Dominant strings. The violin has aged well and produces a robust yet mellow and dark tone in the lower range with good projection.
The varnish is a bit worn on the middle ribs and the top varnish has numerous nicks and scratches from years of playing. The edges are a bit worn but have newer varnish. Another interesting feature of this violin is the painted grain on the back and neck, where it can be seen wearing off. The back is actually nicely figured maple, but they painted
it
over to make it even more eye catching.
And Stanley isn't the only autograph.
In just the right light, a very faint "Betty" is scratched into the back varnish (see photo). There is also a thin black squiggled line on the upper right treble rib, which is under the varnish and may be an attempt to imitate older violins. There is another black line under the treble foot of the bridge, perhaps to simulate an old crack, as it appears sound. There is a small, well-repaired crack on the lower treble f-hole.
A good fiddle for the intermediate or advanced player looking for a unique instrument.
