Description
This beautiful violin was made in the USA by Ulbrich-Tatter in 1908. It is a Stradivarius model and number 736. The Ulbrich-Tatter company made innovative violins. They are immediately recognizable by the 'popsicle stick' spruce top, made with a process using tongue and groove strips of spruce in the way classic boats were made. The strips had glue applied to the sides and placed into a mould then under high pressure were formed into shape resulting in extremely strong tops. If you look closely at the pics of the top you can see the individual strips where they join to the next one at an angled miter. These violins were available in several levels and price points, and this one is the nicest I have had, and I have owned at least 20 of them over the years. The tops have proven more durable than standard spruce tops yet the tonal characteristics are virtually indistinguishable from the standard spruce tops. The top models also use an unusual 3-bassbar system with the bassbars getting smaller progressively. The North American Maple tonewood used on the back and ribs is beautiful, unique to North American maple, and wonderfully figured. North American maple possesses similar qualities to the better European maple, and produces a warm and projecting tone. It needs to be used by a professional musician to be fully appreciated. It sounds very good. Sadly some fake copies have been made by printing and inserting a fake label into an ordinary violin, usually a cheap German or Czech violin. Those are not the 'popsicle stick' real ones, and because the Ulbrich-Tatter have in the last two decades become collectible and quite sought after, the fakes have naturally started to appear. The real ones will be thousands of dollars. The fakes are a few hundred. Ulbrich-Tatter never made a standard top violin.Have fun playing it. This is an outstanding violin.
The new strings are German Silver. A set of synthetic strings would add even more color to this already fabulous instrument. The bridge is a 3 star Cremona Made in Germany, the soundpost was
