    WHY WE BUILD
    A MOTORCYCLE WITH A
    4O-YEAR-OLD ENGINE.
In 1970, Yamaha introduced its first
    four-stroke vertical twin—the XS-1.
And it was better than any motorcycle
of this type had ever been before.
The British had long used this
engine design because of its steadfest-
    ness, reliability and willingness to
    perform. Unfortunately, it suffered from
the shakes as its two big pistons slapped
    joyously up and down.
    But today’s 1978 XS650, with its
    sophisticated overhead cam, represents
the ultimate refinement of this grand old
mill. After eight years of continual
    improvement, that nerve-numbing
vibration has become merely a blurred
    memory.
    Crankshaft counterweighting, spe-
cial engine mounting and a lot of late
nights in the Yamaha engineering labs
have made the XS650 one of the
    smoothest, most reliable and versa-
tile street machines you can buy.
    All the modern-day niceties
    are included. Tailing-caliper front
disc brake for better handling and
    surer stops. Electric starter. Adjust-
    able five-position shocks. Everything
you need to get from here to there with
    comfort and confidence.
And, as you can see, all the styling
tradition of those wonderful days gone
    by is still there, too.
    The 1978 Yamaha XS650. Some
    things get better with age.

    narrow fourstroke twin.

    make for smoother performance and
    greater durability.
    ^•Matched 38mm constant-velocity
    carburetors feed regularfuel to valves
with special alloy seats. Powerband is
    exceptionally broad and usable.
    5. Special double-duplex cradle frame
    is reinforced at high-stress areas
    and designed with precision geometry
    relationships.
    6. Close-ratio, five-speed transmission
ivith short-throw lever for fast, positive
    shifting in any situation.
