INTRODUCING THE XS EIEVEN.
When we set out
to design the XS
Eleven three long
years ago, we were
determined to make
it the fastest pro-
duction four-stroke
in the world. It was
an exciting prospect.
Today, the excite-
ment is gone. It’s
been replaced by sheer, unalloyed jubilation.
Because, in a standing quarter-mile test
conducted by Motorcyclist Magazine, using
a completely stock machine, the XS Eleven
broke the magic 12-second barrier with an
unbelievable 11.73 seconds.
That kind of performance could only
come from this kind of engine: our amazing
new HOlcc, double overhead cam, four cylin-
der power plant that’s been tested, refined
and honed to a state of absolute perfection.
Each cylinder is assigned its own 34mm
“Type II,” constant-velocity Mikuni carbu-
retor to insure the exact air/fuel mixture for
maximum horsepower and economy.
Yamaha’s exclusive Transistor Controlled
Ignition provides a hot, reliable spark,
using precise electronic impulses instead of
mechanical breaker points.
And our vacuum advance system—an-
other Yamaha exclusive—automatically
senses and adjusts ignition timing for clean,
efficient combustion and rocket-like acceleration.
Even if you like to travel two-up with a
full load of touring gear, the XS Eleven can
handle it effortlessly.
It’s fast, all right. But just making a fast
motorcycle wasn’t good enough for us. So we
also built in an uncanny smoothness. Our
state-of-the-art shaft drive
uses a set of spiral bevel
gears and an automotive
typeu-joint to deliver
that turbine-like quality.
r And since the engine crank-
shaft is mounted transversely,
there’s none of the torque reaction
common to other shaft-driven machines.
This penchant for smoothness plus the
Eleven’s narrow design and optimum frame
geometry result in comfort and handling
characteristics totally uncharacteristic of a
superbike. It’s as agile in wide sweeping
turns as it is in tight city traffic.
As for extras, they’re all there —without
costing extra. Triple hydraulic disc brakes.
Cast aluminum wheels.Three-way-adjust-
able front forks. Electronic fuel gauge.
Complete instrumentation. And more.
When you stop to think about it, the
XS Eleven gives you just about everything:
superbike speed, roadster nimbleness,
tourer comfort.
Three beautiful motorcycles.
For the price of one.
YAMAHA

three spring preload positions.

Dual front disc brakes for positive
stopping power. The calipers are
mounted behind the forks for
better handling.

out or replace.

aluminum wheel No spokes.
No spoke problems. A rear
disc brake is standard
equipment, too.

dling and durability.
