A new kind of
big motorcycle.
The new Yamaha XS750. It’s not just
another large motorcycle that’s too
big, nor is it just a fast, one-dimen-
sional speed machine.
Rather, the new Yamaha XS750
is one of the very few large motor-
cycles currently available that’s been
engineered and designed, from the
frame up, for the experienced
enthusiast who demands a well-
powered, incredibly smooth operat-
ing machine for touring, commuting,
and the pure pleasure of riding.
Dual Overhead Cams
TheDOHC
four-stroke triple.
The XS75O’s engine is the first ele-
ment of this machine’s uniqueness.
It’s a dual overhead cam three cylin-
der four-stroke engine. This trans-
versely-mounted triple displaces 747
cubic centimeters with a 68mm bore
and a 68.6mm stroke. The long stroke
provides a high degree of low end
torque, for acceleration and cruising.
Yet the engine revs easily and devel-
ops a remarkable amount of useable
horsepower. And each of the cylin-
ders is efficiently
fed by its
own 34mm constant velocity Mikuni
carburetor. The engine runs with
incredible smoothness because of the
120° crankshaft configuration (see
illustration). And the crankcase is
equipped with a Positive Crankcase
Ventilation System to keep blow-by
gases within the engine.
The shaft drive.
Certainly the shaft drive is the kind
of feature which sets a motorcycle in
a totally different class. And for good
reason. The XS75O’s shaft drive,
coupled with the powerful DOHC
triple, makes this motorcycle's
performance
incredibly
smooth. The shaft itself is fully en-
closed so that no drive-line part is
exposed, which makes the XS750’s
maintenance almost trouble free.
The drive-train’s
performance.
The performance of this transversely-
mounted shaft drive DOHC triple is
unlike most other motorcycles. The
engine’s evenly developed horse-
power is transferred with minimum
vibration directly to the rear wheel.
The entire operation of powering
the rear wheel is smoother than a
chain, easier to maintain, and more
mechanically precise. Since the crank-
shaft is transversely-mounted there
is no torque reaction that’s common
to other shaft drive motorcycles. In
essence, the new Yamaha XS750
offers the proven advantages of shaft
drive without excess weight or bulk
normally associated with this type
of drive-train.
Suspension and brakes.
The XS750's chassis, designed for this
shaft-driven triple, is a modified
duplex cradle for extra rigidity. The
rake and trail of the front fork are
positioned for
sureness and com-
fort on long distance
touring. Likewise,
the seating position
and the seat have
been designed and
positioned for long distance
comfort.
The XS75O’s braking is com-
pletely hydraulic disc, with a twin
disc configuration on the front. And
the front disc calipers are mounted
behind the fork tubes, so they have
little or no affect on steering. The
rear disc is mounted opposite the
shaft drive for balance.
Athoroughly
revolutionary machine.
The details of the XS75O are proof
of expert design and advanced tech-
nology from Yamaha. The cast alu- q.
minum alloy wheels for example. The i
XS750 is one of the few production
motorcycles with mag-type wheels.
They improve the appearance, and ($
also provide easy maintenance. The
XS750 also has automatic cancelling
turn signals, a safety innovation which
turns off a signal after an appropriate
lapse of time or distance traveled.
And if the headlight filament bums
out, the other filament will be
activated automatically—
another safety feature
oftheXS750.
